The 20th World Athletics Championships for men and women will begin next Saturday, September 13. They will be held in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, until the 21st of this month, with the participation of approximately 2,000 athletes.


 Our national athletics teams, both men's and women's, are participating with a roster that includes Winifred Yafi (3,000m steeplechase), Salwa Eid Nasser (women's 400m), Adeko Olkeme (400m hurdles), Eunice Jumba, Shatay Ashtey (women's marathon), Nelly Jepkobji (800m), and runner Birhanu Belaw (5,000m).


Our national team will begin its participation next Sunday, September 14, when runner Salwa Eid will compete in the 400m heats at 1:25 PM local Bahrain time, while Olympic champion Winifred Yafi will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase heats on Monday, September 15, at 3:15 AM.


 Adeko Olukemi will begin the 400m hurdles heats on Monday, September 15, at 5:20 a.m. The women's marathon final will be held on Monday, September 15, at 1:30 a.m. Nelly Jepkobje will compete in the 800m heats on Wednesday, September 18, at 1:55 p.m. Finally, Birhanu Belaw will compete in the men's 5,000m final on Friday, September 19, at 2:05 p.m.


Bahrain has won 14 medals in its eight World Athletics Championships, including eight gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.


The national athletics team's remarkable debut came at the 2005 Helsinki Games, where Rashid Ramzi achieved a historic achievement for the Kingdom of Bahrain by winning the 1,500m gold medal and the 800m gold medal.


 At the 2007 Osaka Championships, runner Mariam Gamal made her mark on the honor roll, winning the women's 1,500m gold medal, while Rashid Ramzi won silver in the 1,500m.


The 2009 Berlin Games saw three medals: Youssef Saad Kamel won the 1,500m gold and 800m bronze, while Mariam Gamal won the 1,500m gold.


Athletics returned to the podium at the 2015 China Games with runner Eunice Kirwa winning bronze in the marathon.


 In the 2017 London edition, Rose Chelimo won the gold medal in the women's marathon, and Salwa Eid Nasser took the silver medal in the women's 400m. Bahrain topped the Arab world in this edition and ranked twelfth in the world. Bahraini athletics achieved remarkable success in the 2019 Doha edition, winning three medals, including a historic gold medal in the women's 400m by runner Salwa Eid Nasser, a silver medal in the women's marathon by runner Rose Chelimo, and a memorable bronze medal by the mixed 4x400m relay team, consisting of Salwa Eid Nasser, Aminat Jamal, Abbas Abubaker, and Musa Issa.


In the most recent edition of the World Championships in Hungary 2023, runner Winifred Yafi won the gold medal in the women's 3m hurdles.
