The year 1974 was the beginning...

The Bahrain Athletics Federation was established on Saturday, November 3, 1974, and was re-registered under number 3 on July 16, 1990, with the General Organization for Youth and Sports, in accordance with Decree-Law No. (21) of 1989. The Bahrain Athletics Federation has a bylaw consistent with the model bylaw for the bylaws of sports federations in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Since its founding on November 3, 1974, the Bahrain Athletics Federation has gone through several stages, both administratively and technically. On the administrative level, the federation was honored to join the Arab Athletics Federation in 1975, then joined the continental and international levels in 1977 and 1976, respectively. On the technical level, the federation has relied on distinguished training expertise since its inception. The coaching staff was Egyptian, then American, and then from the brotherly Maghreb. All of them performed admirably, resulting in outstanding achievements. These include champions Ahmed Jassim Hamada, the 400m hurdles champion, who recorded a time of 31.49 seconds in the Asian Games and 17.14 seconds in the Arab Games in the 110m hurdles. Khalid Jumaa, the Arab champion, who recorded a time of 41.10 seconds in the 100m. At the time, he was considered the fastest Arab runner of 1989. These two athletes were a testament to these training efforts. Furthermore, distinguished Bahraini coaching and refereeing cadres emerged.

On September 23, 1995, in the afternoon, Bahraini athlete Abdulaziz Matar ascended the Asian 200m Championship podium, waving to the crowds who had gathered to witness a new star, listen to the Bahraini national anthem, and watch the Bahraini flag flutter in the sky of Jakarta. The achievement of Asian champion Abdulaziz Matar is a remarkable achievement for Bahraini sports in general and for athletics in particular. The 18-year-old achieved a remarkable victory over Chinese champion Huang and Japanese champion Osaka Da by completing the race in a time of 76.20 seconds.

As for elite sports, we can say that Ahmed Hamada, the former Asian champion who ascended the Asian and world podiums, is not and will not be the only Bahraini champion to have been honored with this achievement. Abdulaziz Matar is another Asian champion, and many of his colleagues will, God willing, prove the truth of this statement, and the following Bahraini records confirm this.

Champion Salem Nasser Bakhit won the silver medal in the high jump competition at the 12th Arab Athletics Championships in Syria, and rising athlete Fatima Ibrahim won the bronze medal. The Bahraini athletes' participation marks the first Gulf women's team to participate in the Arab Athletics Championships.
